Why We Publish the Specs

Most roofing sites describe materials in adjectives: "durable," "premium," "built to last." We'd rather show you the actual underlayment spec, the fastening pattern, and the manufacturer we use, because that's the information that determines how a roof performs here. Albuquerque's altitude, UV exposure, and thermal cycling put measurable stress on every roofing material. The pages above walk through how each one holds up here.

Not sure which material is right for your situation? A Free Roof Report is the fastest way to get a clear answer, and our Roof Cost Guide breaks down what each option costs.

GAF Product Lines We Install

Timberwolf Construction Inc. is a GAF Certified Contractor for both residential and commercial roofing, which unlocks access to GAF's manufacturer-backed extended warranty coverage on qualifying systems, on top of the materials themselves.

Residential: Shingle Systems

Every shingle roof we install runs on GAF's Timberline HDZ, Timberline UHDZ, and Grand Sequoia lines, in the colors homeowners pick most in this market. Timberline UHDZ is available in a Class 4 impact-resistant version (Timberline UHDZ with UltraMat™), the highest rating available under UL 2218, which can qualify for a homeowners insurance discount in a hail-prone market like Albuquerque.

How Our Materials Compare to the Ones We Don’t Install

We don’t install every roofing material on the market. Here’s a fair, short look at the common ones we pass on, what each does well, and why we choose what we install for New Mexico homes.

Real cedar shake vs. Enviroshake

What it does well: A natural wood look and texture that many homeowners love.

The trade-offs: Untreated cedar shakes carry no fire rating. Factory fire-retardant treatment can raise that to Class C, B or A depending on the roof assembly, and natural wood weathers in high-altitude sun and dry air.

Why we use what we use: Enviroshake gives the cedar look with a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating and a Class A fire rating. We’re an Enviroshake Factory Trained Installer.

Natural slate vs. Enviroslate and GAF

What it does well: Real stone with a very long service life and a look nothing else quite matches.

The trade-offs: Natural slate typically weighs 800 to 1,500 pounds per roofing square, compared with roughly 250 to 350 for asphalt shingles, so many homes need the framing checked or reinforced first. Individual slates can also crack when walked on or struck.

Why we use what we use: Enviroslate delivers the slate look, rated UL 2218 Class 4, at a fraction of the weight. For a classic shingle look, our GAF shingle systems carry a Class A fire rating and system warranties when the full system goes on.

Other synthetic slate and shake brands vs. Enviroshake

What it does well: Lighter than real slate or wood, and many look convincing from the street.

The trade-offs: Impact and fire ratings vary from brand to brand and even product to product, so each one has to be checked on its own.

Why we use what we use: We install the composite line we’re factory trained on, so we know its ratings and installation details firsthand.

Stone-coated steel vs. Zia metal panels

What it does well: Steel strength with a shingle or tile look, and many products carry impact ratings.

The trade-offs: The stone-granule surface can shed granules over time, and most systems install over battens with more pieces and seams.

Why we use what we use: The Zia panels we install have a smooth painted finish with no granules to lose, standing seam hides its fasteners, and every panel we install is UL 2218 Class 4. They’re sourced locally from Zia Metal Roofing Supply in Albuquerque.

Rolled roofing vs. GAF TPO on low-slope roofs

What it does well: A quick cover for sheds and outbuildings.

The trade-offs: It’s a single wide sheet meant only for nearly flat roofs, and the wide sheets are vulnerable to temperature-driven shrinkage and tearing, which matters with New Mexico’s big day-to-night swings.

Why we use what we use: On low-slope homes we install GAF TPO, built to the same standard we use on commercial roofs.

Why We Install GAF, and Why the Whole System Matters

Timberwolf is a GAF Certified contractor. We put GAF on our shingle roofs because the product holds up to New Mexico sun, wind and hail, because every part of the roof is engineered to work together, and because the warranty gets stronger when the full system goes on instead of shingles alone.

Quality you can see on the roof

  • Timberline HDZ, GAF’s #1-selling shingle, is built with LayerLock™ technology and a wide StrikeZone™ nailing area designed for up to 99.9% nailing accuracy, so each shingle is fastened where it holds best.
  • A Class A fire rating on Timberline shingles, the highest fire rating for roofing.
  • Class 4 impact-rated GAF options for neighborhoods that see regular hail.
  • Every product traces back to one manufacturer that has been making roofing since 1886 and calls itself North America’s largest roofing and waterproofing manufacturer.

Why the full system, not just shingles

Shingles are only the part you see. Starter strip holds the first course down in wind. Leak barrier stops water at eaves, valleys and penetrations. Roof deck protection sits under everything as a second line of defense. Ridge cap and attic ventilation let heat and moisture out, which matters in an Albuquerque attic in July. When all of those come from one manufacturer, they’re designed and tested together, and one company stands behind the whole roof instead of several brands pointing at each other when something goes wrong.

Warranty coverage that grows with the system

  • GAF Roofing System Limited Warranty: Timberline shingles installed with at least three qualifying GAF accessories.
  • WindProven™ Limited Wind Warranty: 15 years with no maximum wind speed, when Timberline shingles go on with GAF starter strip, roof deck protection, ridge cap, and leak barrier or attic ventilation.
  • GAF System Plus Limited Warranty: available through GAF Certified contractors like us on qualifying full systems. It adds 50 years of non-prorated coverage on defective materials, includes tear-off costs, and can transfer to the next owner if you sell.

Warranty terms, qualifying products and registration requirements are set by GAF; see the GAF limited warranties for complete coverage and restrictions. See the GAF shingle lines we install, or ask for a free roof report and we’ll walk you through which GAF system and warranty fit your home.
