What an Asphalt Shingle Roof Actually Costs in Albuquerque
The shingle tier you pick moves the price less than most homeowners expect. Underlayment, fastening and attic ventilation move it more. This page covers what drives the number on an asphalt shingle job.

The Three Shingle Tiers, Relative to Each Other
For what goes into a full roof price, see our general Roof Cost Guide. Every roof's total depends on size, pitch, and tear-off complexity, so a single number here would be a guess. What helps to know upfront is how the three shingle tiers compare against each other, since that comparison holds no matter what size your roof is.
| 3-Tab | The lowest material cost of the three, but a flat, uniform look and the shortest usable lifespan in this climate. The gap in cost-per-year of service versus Timberline HDZ is smaller than the sticker price difference suggests. |
|---|---|
| Timberline HDZ | Our standard install and the middle tier: dimensional profile, a 15-year WindProven™ wind warranty with no maximum wind speed (with qualifying GAF accessories), and a Lifetime Limited Warranty. For most Albuquerque roofs, it's a strong balance of cost and value. |
| Timberline UHDZ | The premium tier: deeper Dual Shadow Line profile, a 30-year StainGuard Plus PRO warranty, and an optional Class 4 impact-resistant version (Timberline UHDZ with UltraMat™). It costs more per square than HDZ. Whether that premium pays for itself depends on your insurance carrier's discount for Class 4 shingles, covered below. |

† Lifetime refers to the length of warranty coverage provided and means as long as the original individual owner(s) of a single-family detached residence [or eligible second owner(s)] owns the property where the qualifying GAF products are installed. For other owners/structures, Lifetime coverage is not applicable. Lifetime coverage on shingles requires the use of GAF Lifetime Shingles only. See the GAF Shingle & Accessory Limited Warranty for complete coverage and restrictions. Visit gaf.com/LRS for qualifying GAF products. Lifetime coverage on shingles and accessories requires the use of any GAF Lifetime Shingle and at least 3 qualifying GAF Accessories. See the GAF Roofing System Limited Warranty for complete coverage and restrictions. 115-year WindProven™ limited wind warranty on GAF Shingles with LayerLock® Technology requires the use of GAF Starter Strips, Roof Deck Protection, Ridge Cap Shingles, and Leak Barrier or Attic Ventilation. See GAF Roofing System Limited Warranty for complete coverage and restrictions. Visit gaf.com/LRS for qualifying GAF products. 225-year StainGuard Plus™ Algae Protection Limited Warranty and 30-year StainGuard Plus PRO™ Algae Protection Limited Warranty against blue-green algae discoloration is available only on products sold in packages bearing the StainGuard Plus™ and StainGuard Plus PRO™ logos, respectively. See GAF Shingle & Accessory Limited Warranty for complete coverage and restrictions, and qualifying products.
3Grand Sequoia® is not eligible for the WindProven™ Limited Wind Warranty. 130 mph wind coverage requires special installation (6 nails per shingle and GAF Starter Strip products at eaves and rakes); otherwise coverage is 110 mph. See the GAF Shingle & Accessory Limited Warranty for complete coverage and restrictions.
4Only shingles sold in packages bearing the UL 2218 Class 4 Classification statement are rated for Class 4 impact resistance. For Timberline UHDZ®, Class 4 applies only to packages bearing the UltraMat™ logo.

The Class 4 Impact-Resistance Math
Standard Timberline UHDZ is not Class 4 rated. GAF makes a Class 4 version, Timberline UHDZ with UltraMat™, and only packages bearing the UL 2218 Class 4 statement carry that rating. Class 4 is the highest impact-resistance rating under UL 2218, and it's the main reason an impact-rated upgrade can make financial sense beyond curb appeal. Many homeowners insurance carriers offer a premium discount for Class 4 roofing in hail-prone markets, and Albuquerque qualifies. The size of that discount varies by carrier. So the question to ask is what your specific carrier takes off your premium for it. Call your agent before deciding, since that answer changes the payback math entirely. If the discount is the goal, make sure your quote specifies the Class 4 (UltraMat™) version.

What Actually Moves the Price on an Asphalt Job Specifically
- Underlayment: synthetic vs. felt matters here. Felt underlayment fails faster under Albuquerque's UV and thermal cycling, and a quote that uses felt to hit a lower number is cutting a corner that shows up later as a leak
- Fastening pattern: six nails per shingle in the manufacturer zone is the region's wind-rated standard. Four nails is faster and cheaper labor, but it's not the same installation and it can affect warranty coverage if wind damage occurs
- Attic ventilation: if your attic hasn't been evaluated in years, bringing it to code can become a permit condition during the job instead of an optional add-on. See the ventilation section of our Roof Cost Guide for how this typically comes up.
Comparing Quotes for the Same Shingle Tier
If two contractors quote the same Timberline HDZ install at noticeably different prices, the shingle isn't the variable. It's almost always one of the three items above, plus how each contractor weights labor, tear-off, and overhead in their total (the same breakdown that applies to any roof type, covered in the general cost guide). Ask what underlayment and fastening pattern are included before comparing bottom-line numbers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 3-tab shingle cheaper once you factor in lifespan?
Usually not by much, if at all. 3-tab has a lower material cost but a shorter usable lifespan in Albuquerque's UV and thermal-cycling conditions, so the cost-per-year gap narrows or disappears compared to Timberline HDZ.
Does upgrading to Timberline UHDZ pay for itself?
It can, mainly through the Class 4 impact-resistance insurance discount (available on the UltraMat™ Class 4 version) and the longer StainGuard Plus PRO warranty. The shingle itself doesn't last dramatically longer than HDZ. Whether it pencils out depends on your insurance carrier's discount and how long you plan to stay in the home.
Why do two quotes for the same shingle tier come back at different prices?
Usually it's underlayment quality, fastening pattern, and whether attic ventilation work is included. The shingle brand itself isn't the difference. A quote that's missing synthetic underlayment or the six-nail wind-rated pattern is cutting cost somewhere that matters here.
Does roof color affect the price?
Not meaningfully. Color is a stocking and availability question, not a cost driver. All standard GAF colors in a given line are priced the same.
