What Enviroshake Is
Enviroshake is a composite roofing shingle engineered to replicate the look, texture, and shadow lines of natural cedar shake or slate, without being made of wood or stone. It's manufactured from 95% post-industrial recycled material and is itself 100% recyclable at the end of its service life. The result is a roof that reads as a premium, natural shake roof from the street, but performs like an engineered composite where it matters most: fire resistance, impact resistance, and long-term stability.
Compared with real cedar shake: untreated cedar carries no fire rating, and treated shakes reach Class C, B or A only with the right roof assembly. Enviroshake keeps the cedar look with a Class A fire rating and a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating. See how our materials compare.
Timberwolf's partnership with Enviroshake gives Albuquerque and mountain-community homeowners a practical alternative to real wood shake, without the fire liability, insurance difficulty, or maintenance burden that comes with untreated cedar.
Why It Matters in Ruidoso and New Mexico's Wildland Areas
Homes in forested, high-elevation communities like Ruidoso face a wildfire risk that lower-risk areas don't. Airborne embers, not direct flame contact, are one of the most common ways homes ignite during a wildfire. That makes a roof's fire rating one of the most consequential decisions a homeowner in these areas can make.
Enviroshake earns its Class A fire rating (the highest available under ASTM E108) unconditionally. The rating applies to the product itself and doesn't depend on a supplementary fire-resistant underlayment the way many composite shake products do. For homeowners who want the traditional cedar or slate look without restricting themselves to materials that many insurers have grown hesitant to cover in high fire-risk zones, that distinction matters.

The Technical Specs
| Fire rating | Unconditional Class A (ASTM E108 & CAN/ULC-S107), achieved by the material itself, not dependent on added underlayment. Enviroshake also makes a Class C product, so we always specify the Class A version |
|---|---|
| Impact rating | Class 4 (UL 2218), the highest rating available, engineered to withstand hail roughly the size of a large coffee cup |
| Wind resistance | In excess of 180 mph (290 km/h), per ASTM D3161-9A and Miami-Dade wind uplift testing |
| Material composition | 95% post-industrial recycled material; 100% recyclable |
| Resistance | Resists moss, lichen, and insect damage, unlike untreated natural wood shake |
| Thermal stability | Less than 2% seasonal expansion and contraction |
| Rain performance | Tested to 225 mm/hour; runoff is potable and meets WHO drinking water standards |
| Weight | About 260 lbs per square for Enviroshake and Enviroshingle (natural cedar runs 300–500 lbs); about 275 lbs per square for Enviroslate (natural slate can approach 1,900 lbs) |
| Size & profiles | 12″ × 20″ tiles (Enviroshingle is 20″ × 12″). Enviroshake comes in 6 profiles, Enviroshingle in 2, and Enviroslate in 1, for a natural, varied look |
| UV & color | Color runs all the way through the tile, with no paint or topical coating. UV stabilizers are built into the blend. Tiles weather to a natural matte finish over the first 6–12 months, then hold their color |
| Cool-roof option | Envirocool® is rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council, with an SRI of 31 (custom Bermuda White reaches 80.7). Any product with an SRI over 19 counts as a cool roof |
| Codes & programs | Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) compliant. Enviroshake and Enviroslate are approved for the FORTIFIED Roof™ program. Meets Miami-Dade High Velocity Hurricane Zone requirements |
| Roof pitch | Custom hip and ridge tiles for slopes from 2/12 to 20/12 |
| Cold-weather install | Can be installed down to −4°F overnight temperatures as long as the roof is dry, which helps with winter work in Ruidoso and the East Mountains |
| Product lines | Enviroshake® (cedar-look shake), Enviroslate® (slate-look), Enviroshingle® (cedar-shingle look), and Envirocool® (cool-roof cedar look). Each is available in standard, premium, and custom colors |
| Warranty | Fully transferable limited lifetime warranty (50 years). Gold-Level coverage requires installation by an Enviroshake Factory Trained Installer, Enviroshield® synthetic underlayment, and online warranty registration |
Good Fit / Not a Good Fit
- Good fit if you want the look of natural cedar shake or slate in a high fire-risk area like Ruidoso
- Good fit if real wood shake is restricted by local code or difficult to insure in your area
- Good fit for homeowners who want low maintenance without giving up a natural, dimensional look
- Not the right call if minimizing upfront material cost is the top priority over appearance and fire performance
Introducing Enviroshake
A quick look at what makes Enviroshake different from a typical composite roof.
Featured Installations
Enviroshake holds its look across a wide range of homes and buildings, from residential re-roofs to lakeside pavilions and historic institutional buildings.

Enviroshake Product Lines & Colors
Enviroshake® makes three composite roofing profiles depending on the look you're after: a traditional taper-sawn cedar shake, a 5″ perfection cedar shingle, and a slate-inspired finish. Each is available in a range of standard, premium, and custom colors.

New: Envirocool® Cool-Roof Option
Envirocool is Enviroshake’s cool-roof version of its cedar-look shake. It reflects more of the sun’s heat than cedar or asphalt, and it’s independently rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council. In Albuquerque’s strong sun, a cooler roof surface can mean a cooler attic and lower cooling bills. Envirocool comes in Tropical Silver, Aged Cedar, and Silvered Cedar.

Accessories, Installation & Warranty
An Enviroshake roof is a full system, not just the tiles. It includes:
- Hip and ridge tiles custom formed to match, for roofs from 2/12 to 20/12 pitch.
- Enviroshield® synthetic underlayment, a secondary water barrier over the roof deck. It’s required for the Gold-Level Warranty.
- Stainless steel fasteners (304 or 316 grade nails or screws) that won’t rust or streak.
- Alpine® snow guards, which Enviroshake strongly recommends anywhere that gets snow, including Ruidoso and the East Mountains.
Installation matters. Enviroshake’s warranty is only valid when the roof is installed by an Enviroshake Factory Trained Installer, and the roof has to be registered with Enviroshake after the job. Timberwolf is a certified Enviroshake Factory Trained Installer. Enviroshake can be installed over one layer of existing asphalt shingles where local code allows, but the manufacturer doesn’t recommend it. We’d rather check the roof deck and fix any problems first.
A note on safety: the tiles can be walked on, but they’re slippery when wet.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Enviroshake really as fire-resistant as it sounds?
Yes. Enviroshake carries an unconditional Class A fire rating under ASTM E108, the highest rating available, and achieves it on the product itself, not because of an added fire-resistant underlayment. That's a meaningful distinction from many composite shake products, which only reach Class A when paired with a supplementary layer.
How does Enviroshake compare to real cedar shake?
Enviroshake is designed to replicate the look, texture, and shadow lines of natural cedar shake, but it's made from a recycled composite material rather than wood. That means no fire liability from untreated wood, no susceptibility to moss, lichen, or insect damage, and a lifespan that isn't shortened by rot or weathering the way real cedar's can be.
Can Enviroshake survive hail?
Yes. Enviroshake carries a Class 4 impact rating under UL 2218, the highest available. It's engineered to withstand impacts from hail roughly the size of a large coffee cup, and it has a documented record of zero warranty claims following a major Calgary hailstorm that produced hailstones up to 4 centimeters.
Is Enviroshake a good fit for Ruidoso and other wildfire-prone areas?
Yes. It's one of the better options for homeowners who want a wood-shake look in a high fire-risk area. Its unconditional Class A fire rating makes it a practical alternative where untreated wood shake would be restricted by local code or difficult to insure.
Does Enviroshake make a cool-roof version?
Yes. Envirocool is Enviroshake’s cool-roof product, rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council with an SRI of 31 (custom Bermuda White reaches 80.7). It reflects more of the sun’s heat than cedar or asphalt, which can help keep your attic cooler in Albuquerque’s summers.
How heavy is Enviroshake compared to cedar or slate?
Enviroshake and Enviroshingle weigh about 260 lbs per roofing square, compared with 300–500 lbs for natural cedar. Enviroslate weighs about 275 lbs per square, while natural slate can weigh close to 1,900 lbs. Most homes don’t need extra structural work to carry it.
Will the color fade in New Mexico’s sun?
Enviroshake’s color runs all the way through each tile, with no paint or coating to wear off, and UV stabilizers are built into the material. The tiles weather to a natural matte look over the first 6–12 months, then hold that color for the life of the roof.
Is Enviroshake approved for wildfire and severe-weather programs?
Yes. Enviroshake is Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) compliant, and Enviroshake and Enviroslate are approved products in the FORTIFIED Roof™ program. It also meets Miami-Dade High Velocity Hurricane Zone wind requirements.
Can Enviroshake be installed in winter?
Yes. It can be installed down to −4°F overnight temperatures as long as the roof is dry, which makes winter projects in Ruidoso and the East Mountains more practical than with many other synthetic products.
Is Timberwolf a certified Enviroshake installer?
Yes. Timberwolf Construction is a certified Enviroshake Factory Trained Installer. Enviroshake requires a Factory Trained Installer for its warranty to be valid, and Gold-Level coverage also requires Enviroshield underlayment and online warranty registration.
