Quick answer

Hail left bruised spots across this Southeast Albuquerque roof where the impacts had knocked granules off the shingles. You couldn't see it from the street. Timberwolf documented the damage during a free roof inspection in September 2026. On October 22 and 23, 2026, the crew tore the roof off down to the deck and installed GAF Tiger Paw underlayment, new drip edge and GAF Timberline Natural Shadow (NS) architectural shingles with new ridge cap. The homeowner’s insurance claim was approved after Timberwolf documented the damage and met the adjuster on the roof. The homeowner found us through a referral.

The Problem

This single-story home in Southeast Albuquerque has a hip-and-valley roof covered in light gray architectural shingles. From the street, it looked fine. No missing shingles, nothing hanging off the edges.

Up close it was a different story. During our free roof inspection we found hail hits across every slope: dark, bruised spots where the impacts had knocked the granules off the shingles.

Those granules matter. They're the layer that protects an asphalt shingle from the sun. Once hail knocks them loose, Albuquerque's strong UV starts drying out the asphalt underneath. The shingle gets brittle, cracks, and eventually lets water through. For the warning signs, see our guide to hail damage.

What We Recommended

We walked every slope and photographed the hail hits, the vents and the valleys so the homeowner could see exactly what we saw. The damage was spread across the whole roof, not one corner, so patching a few shingles wouldn't have fixed it. The right call was a full roof replacement.

The homeowner filed a claim with her insurance company. Our dated photos documented the damage, and we came out when the adjuster inspected the roof to point out every hail hit we had found. The claim was approved for a full roof replacement. If you’re going through that yourself, our insurance claims page explains how it works.

The New Roof

On October 22 the crew tore the old shingles off down to the wood deck, so the decking could be checked before it was covered again. Next went GAF Tiger Paw, a synthetic underlayment that sits under the shingles as a second layer of protection against water, and new black metal drip edge along the eaves.

Then came the shingles: GAF Timberline NS (Natural Shadow) architectural shingles. They're laminated, so they're thicker than basic flat shingles and give the roof more depth and shadow lines. On October 23 the crew finished the hips and ridge with new ridge cap and flashed every vent pipe into the new roof.

Questions Homeowners Ask

How can you tell if hail damaged your roof?

Look up close, not from the street. Hail leaves dark, bruised spots where it knocks the granules off the shingle. From the ground, a hail-damaged roof like this one can look perfectly fine, which is why an on-the-roof inspection with photos matters.

Why does granule loss matter in Albuquerque?

The granules protect the asphalt from the sun. At Albuquerque's altitude the UV is strong, so a spot that has lost its granules dries out and breaks down much faster than the rest of the shingle. Small hail hits turn into cracks, leaks and a shorter roof life.

How long does a hail roof replacement take?

This single-story home took two days. Tear-off, underlayment and drip edge went on the first day. Shingles and ridge cap were finished on the second. Bigger or steeper roofs, or decking repairs, can add time.

What is GAF Timberline Natural Shadow (NS)?

Timberline Natural Shadow, or NS, is an architectural (laminated) shingle in GAF's Timberline line. It's thicker than a flat 3-tab shingle and has shadow lines that give the roof more depth. As a GAF Certified Contractor, Timberwolf installs it as part of a complete GAF roofing system.

Did Hail Hit Your Roof?

Hail damage doesn't always leak right away, and it's hard to spot from the ground. If you're anywhere in the Albuquerque area, a Free Roof Report will tell you whether your shingles took hail damage or whether your roof is fine. Either way, you get dated photos and a written report to keep. You can also check your address for recent storms.
