Edgewood Home: Weathered Fascia Wrapped in Metal to Match the Roof

The metal roof was fine. The rough-cut wood fascia under it was not. We closed up broken soffit sections and covered the second-story fascia with custom-bent Rustic Red metal that matches the roof, without touching the roof itself.

The Problem

The homeowner called us for a roof inspection. Up on the ladder, the metal roof checked out. The trouble was the trim around it. The fascia was rough-cut lumber that years of East Mountains sun and freeze-thaw had dried out, split and stripped of its finish. In a few spots the wood had holes in it. Along the eaves, sections of the soffit had broken and pulled apart, leaving gaps open to the attic space.

Left alone, that kind of damage gets worse every season. Open soffits invite birds, wasps and wind-driven dust into the attic, and bare wood keeps soaking up snowmelt and drying out until it rots.

What We Recommended

Matt Kennerly did the inspection himself and was straight with the homeowner: the roof didn't need replacing. The fix was the trim. Instead of tearing out and replacing the old fascia boards, we proposed wrapping them in custom-bent metal fascia covers made to fit this house:

  • An 11-inch fascia cover for the second story, with a half-inch drip edge kick at the bottom to throw water clear of the wall
  • Rustic Red color, chosen to match the existing metal roof
  • Broken soffit sections cut out and patched with continuous aluminum soffit vent
  • Gasketed screws and elastomeric sealant at every overlap and connection

The soffit patching was the fussy part. These soffits aren't standard panels. They butt right up against the rough-cut fascia, so every broken piece had to be cut and fitted by hand.

The trim now matches the roof, and the soffit is closed up and vented. Because the metal covers sit over the old wood, the homeowner kept the existing structure and skipped a full tear-out. We installed everything in one day.

Is Your Fascia Telling You Something?

Peeling paint, soft spots or gaps along the eaves are easy to miss from the driveway. A free roof inspection covers the fascia, soffits and gutters too, not just the roof surface. If it's the trim and not the roof, we'll tell you that, and if it is a leak or a damaged roof section, our roof repair team handles that too.
