Los Lunas Home: Hail-Damaged Shingle Roof Replaced With GAF Timberline NS
The September 28, 2025 hailstorm knocked the granules off this asphalt shingle roof, but you couldn't see it from the driveway. We found the damage, documented it, and replaced the whole roof with GAF Timberline NS shingles in Charcoal over GAF Tiger Paw underlayment.

The Problem
When the September 2025 hailstorm rolled through Los Lunas, a lot of roofs took hits that nobody noticed. From the ground, this one looked fine. The shingles were still on and there were no leaks inside.
Up close it was a different story. During our free roof inspection we found hail hits across the roof, with spots where the granules had been knocked off the shingles.
Those granules matter. They're the layer that protects an asphalt shingle from the sun. Once hail knocks them loose, the New Mexico UV starts drying out and breaking down the asphalt underneath. The shingle gets brittle, cracks, and eventually lets water through. That's why hail damage that looks minor today often turns into leaks a few years later.
Before
BeforeWhat We Recommended
We walked every slope and took dated photos of the damaged shingles and the vents. The hail hits were spread across the whole roof, not just one corner, so patching a few shingles wouldn't have fixed it. The right call was a full roof replacement.
The homeowner used our written Free Roof Report for their insurance claim, and the replacement was approved. (If you're going through that yourself, our insurance claims page explains how it works.)
The New Roof
On install day the crew tore the old shingles down to the deck. Next went GAF Tiger Paw, a synthetic underlayment that sits under the shingles as a second layer of protection against water.
Then came the new asphalt shingles: GAF Timberline NS (Natural Shadow) architectural shingles in Charcoal. Architectural shingles are laminated, so they're thicker than basic flat shingles and give the roof more depth and shadow lines. We finished with new ridge cap and new roof vents.
The homeowner went from tan to Charcoal, a big change that gives the house a cleaner, more modern look. If you're weighing colors yourself, see our guide to shingle colors in New Mexico.

Was Your Roof in the September 2025 Storm?
Hail damage doesn't always leak right away, and it's hard to spot from the ground. If you're in Los Lunas or anywhere else that storm hit, a Free Roof Report will tell you whether your shingles took hail damage, or whether your roof is fine. Either way, you get dated photos and a written report to keep. You can also check your address for recent storms.
