The Short Answer
Often, yes. An exposed-fastener panel like Zia Rib or PBR can be a good, lower-cost metal roof for an Albuquerque home, provided the roof has enough slope and you're comfortable with visible screws. The tradeoff is maintenance. Every screw goes through the panel, and its rubber washer sits in full sun for the life of the roof, so those fasteners need periodic checks. Standing seam hides the fasteners under the panel and costs more.

All of Zia's profiles carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, the highest hail rating, and Zia's paint warranty covers cracking, flaking and peeling for 40 years and chalking and fading for 30 years. The difference between these panels is how they're attached, not how tough the steel is.
Where Exposed Fasteners Work Well
- Budget-minded homes that want metal's hail resistance and lifespan without standing-seam pricing.
- Garages, shops, barns and patio covers, where the look of visible screws doesn't matter.
- Rural and ranch-style homes in the East Mountains, Corrales and the valley, where a ribbed agricultural look fits.
- Simple roof shapes. Long, uninterrupted slopes suit wide 36" panels. Roofs with many valleys, hips and penetrations mean more cuts and more fasteners near seams.
The Tradeoffs to Understand First
Fastener maintenance. Each screw seals with a rubber washer. Over years of UV and heat, washers can harden and screws can back out slightly, which is the most common source of leaks on exposed-fastener roofs. Plan on having the roof checked every few years and after major wind or hail, with loose screws tightened or replaced. Our maintenance plan covers this.
Thermal movement. Metal expands in the afternoon sun and contracts at night, and Albuquerque's daily temperature swings are large. On a through-fastened panel the screws hold the panel tight at every fastener, so that movement works on the screw holes over time. Standing seam clips let the panel slide, which is one reason standing seam is the long-term choice on high-end homes. See thermal cycling and roof damage.
Slope. Zia Rib needs at least a 2:12 pitch. Very low slopes call for PBR or standing seam, and flat roofs call for a membrane system instead. See flat and low-slope systems.
Appearance and HOA rules. Visible screw lines read as agricultural. Some HOAs allow standing seam but not exposed-fastener panels on homes.
How We Install It on a Home
For homes, Zia recommends solid decking with underlayment under any of its panels, even though the panels are also designed for open framing on outbuildings. We install on solid decking with underlayment, follow Zia's published fastening pattern for the profile, and include every penetration and edge detail in the written quote.
