The Mechanism, Not Just the Claim
Higher up, there's less air above you. That thinner air normally filters out some UV rays before they reach the ground. With less air in the way, more UV gets through — the EPA puts this at about a 6% increase in UV intensity per kilometer of elevation gained. It's the same reason people sunburn faster in the mountains than at the beach on an equally sunny day. A roof can't get sunburned, but something similar happens to it: UV rays slowly break down the oils in asphalt shingles. This process is called oxidation.
What Oxidation Does to a Shingle
Asphalt shingles need oil to stay flexible and hold their granules in place. UV rays dry that oil out over time. That's what causes two things homeowners actually notice: granules washing into the gutters (the oil that held them stopped working), and shingles that crack instead of flex when the temperature changes.
This doesn't happen all at once. A roof doesn't fail from sun exposure on one bad day. It loses a little strength every year, until eventually something else — hail, wind, a big temperature swing — does damage that a newer roof would have shrugged off.
Why This Matters More Here Than the Warranty Suggests
Manufacturer warranties are tested under standard conditions. Those conditions don't fully account for a high-altitude, high-UV place like Albuquerque. A shingle rated for 30 years in a lab test might realistically last closer to 20-25 years here. That's not because the shingle is bad — it's because it's getting more sun than the rating assumed. This isn't about one bad manufacturer or product. It's a mismatch between how ratings get tested and the sun roofs really deal with here.
It Gets Worse When You Add Temperature Swings
UV damage doesn't happen alone. It teams up with New Mexico's big daily temperature swings (we cover this more in our thermal cycling article) — Albuquerque's average daily high-low spread runs around 24 degrees, well wider than more humid climates, per NWS climate normals. A shingle that's already dried out from UV exposure has less give left in it. So when the temperature swings that much in a single day, it's more likely to crack instead of flexing like it should. These two things make each other worse — which is exactly why climate-specific know-how matters more here than a one-size-fits-all approach.
What This Means Practically for Homeowners
- Don't just watch the warranty number. A roof rated for 25-30 years deserves a real inspection starting around year 15-18 here, not right before the rating runs out.
- Granules in the gutter are a real early warning sign, not just leaves and dirt. It's visible proof the oxidation process above is happening.
- Material choice matters more here than in milder climates. Some roofing materials hold up to UV and altitude better than others. Worth a real conversation about this, not just picking by price.
